Ripple’s XRP Ledger enables institutions to issue programmable promissory notes, digital commitments that can be time bound, conditional, and enforced through smart contracts. These notes are stored on-chain, ensuring transparency and security, and can only be redeemed under predefined terms. Once redeemed or expired, they’re automatically removed from the ledger, eliminating reconciliation delays and ensuring real time accuracy across parties.
This infrastructure directly supports Project Promissa, a BIS-led initiative launched in April 2025 to digitize sovereign promissory notes pledged to multilateral development banks. Promissa aims to modernize and automate how these pledges are tracked, settled, and redeemed across ministries of finance, central banks, and MDB treasuries. Not to mention Ripple had partnered with the BIS and CPMI for infrastructure overhaul.
Ripple’s role in this evolution is more than theoretical. The IMF’s 2023 Trust Bridges and Money Flows report explicitly cites XRP as a supported asset in models for cross-border tokenized payments, identifying Ripple’s infrastructure as a candidate for linking sovereign payment obligations with programmable digital money. Ripple is also actively engaged with the BIS and CPMI on interoperability and liquidity architecture, making XRP a key piece in the future of digital sovereign finance and trust enhanced cross-border settlement.
