⚠ Coinbase Hacked After Attackers Bribed Company's Own Employees To Leak Customer Data
🔹 Cybercriminals bribed overseas customer support contractors to steal sensitive user data from Coinbase, impacting less than 1% of monthly active users.
🔹 Stolen info includes names, addresses, phone numbers, emails, partial social security numbers, masked bank account details, government ID images, account balances, and transaction histories. No passwords, private keys, or funds were exposed, and Coinbase Prime accounts were unaffected.
🔹 Attackers demanded $20 million in Bitcoin to keep the breach quiet, but Coinbase refused to pay. Instead, the company is offering a $20 million reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
🔹 The stolen data is already being used for social engineering scams, with attackers impersonating Coinbase support to trick users into sending crypto. Coinbase pledged to reimburse any customers who fall victim to these scams.
🔹 The hack is expected to cost Coinbase up to $400 million in remediation and reimbursements. All involved employees have been terminated, and Coinbase is ramping up security and fraud prevention, including relocating some support operations to the US.
🔹 CEO Brian Armstrong publicly vowed to pursue the attackers and warned customers to stay vigilant against phishing and impersonation attempts.
