🚨 ECB’s Interim DLT Settlement Solution Delayed: Pilots Now Set for Q3 2026 🚨
🔹 The European Central Bank (ECB) has confirmed its interim solution for wholesale DLT (distributed ledger technology) settlement—called Pontes—will only be available for pilot use by the third quarter of 2026, disappointing many in the industry who hoped for a quicker rollout
🔹 Pontes is designed as a “bridge” to enable DLT-based transactions in central bank money, with Germany’s Trigger solution and possibly Italy’s Hashlink expected to be involved
🔹 This delay creates a roughly two-year gap between last year’s successful DLT settlement trials (involving 64 institutions and €1.6 billion in settlements) and the start of the new pilot phase
🔹 The longer-term solution, Appia, is expected to involve a wholesale central bank digital currency (CBDC) and could ultimately support a unified European ledger and international payments
🔹 In the interim, the lack of a central bank DLT settlement option may push some institutions toward stablecoins or tokenized deposits, though these are not preferred by regulators or widely available in Europe
🔹 The ECB’s two-track approach aims to balance innovation with financial stability, gradually integrating DLT into the existing TARGET system before expanding to more ambitious, integrated solutions
🔹 A report on the 2024 wholesale DLT settlement trials is expected soon, and the ECB will continue to engage with market participants as it develops its roadmap
The ECB’s cautious, phased strategy reflects both the complexity of integrating DLT at scale and the need to maintain market confidence while modernizing Europe’s financial infrastructure.
