🏦🌐 Circle Applies for U.S. Banking License: Aims to Custody $USDC Reserves and Expand Digital Asset Services 🏦
Circle, the issuer of the USDC stablecoin, has formally applied for a national trust bank license with the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, aiming to create First National Digital Currency Bank, N.A.
🔷 If granted, this license would allow Circle to act as a federally regulated custodian for its own USDC reserves and to provide digital asset custody services for institutional clients, strengthening its infrastructure and regulatory standing
🔷 The trust bank license would not permit Circle to accept cash deposits or issue loans like a traditional bank, but it would enable the company to operate across state lines without needing separate licenses in each state
🔷 Circle’s move comes after its recent public offering and is seen as a proactive step to align with anticipated U.S. stablecoin regulations, including requirements under the proposed GENIUS Act
🔷 CEO Jeremy Allaire emphasized that this application is part of Circle’s ongoing commitment to trust, transparency, governance, and compliance, building on its track record of securing key licenses in multiple jurisdictions
🔷 The new entity would join a small group of digital asset firms with national trust bank status, such as Anchorage Digital, and is expected to further integrate digital assets into the broader U.S. financial system
🔷 The application also positions Circle to offer custody for tokenized stocks and bonds, expanding beyond just cryptocurrencies and supporting the evolution of regulated digital finance
Circle’s banking license bid marks a major milestone for the stablecoin issuer and signals a new phase of regulatory integration and institutional adoption in the U.S. digital asset ecosystem.
