I did hear about this about a year ago, I had read about how the FAA is actively working on the air traffic management system and flight procedures that will create those air corridors for what they call Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), which includes "flying cars" (more accurately, electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing, or eVTOL aircraft).
Here is a breakdown of the FAA's current progress:
1. The Focus is on Air Traffic Management, Not Fixed "Lanes"
Instead of pre-drawn, fixed "air lanes," the FAA is developing a high-tech system that will:
🔹Designated Corridors: Air taxis are expected to fly in dedicated corridors at lower altitudes (likely around 1,000–3,000 feet) between major airports and new landing areas called vertiports in city centers.
🔹Performance-Based Rules: The system is built on performance requirements and automation, allowing these aircraft to safely operate alongside traditional air traffic.
🔹Digital Infrastructure: This involves new digital tools for communication, surveillance, and automated route planning to manage the high volume and unique flight profiles of eVTOLs (which take off like helicopters and cruise like planes).
2. Key FAA Milestones Already Achieved
The FAA has already cleared major regulatory hurdles to allow these aircraft to operate:
🔹Pilot and Aircraft Certification: They have issued final rules for the "powered-lift" category of aircraft, which covers eVTOLs. This addresses pilot training, certification, and the operational standards the aircraft must meet.
🔹Vertiport Design: The FAA has released design guidelines (Engineering Briefs) for the ground infrastructure, or vertiports, where these aircraft will take off and land in urban areas. This is the first step in building the "stops" for the air routes.
🔹Implementation Plan: The FAA released its AAM Implementation Plan ("Innovate28" ), which details the steps for safely enabling initial commercial, piloted operations by 2028 at one or more key locations.
In summary, the FAA is building the rules, the technology, and the flight-path framework for flying cars, but the concept is more like a highly automated, dynamic network of low-altitude flight corridors rather than static, pre-drawn lanes.
