🚨 THE PAYCHECK-TO-PAYCHECK REALITY: STUDY FINDINGS 🚨
The PYMNTS Intelligence report, "Beyond the Budget: Inside the Paycheck-to-Paycheck Economy," surveyed over 2,000 U.S. consumers to assess financial strain, revealing a widening gap in financial resilience and record levels of stress.
📉 Key Financial Strain & Gloom
🔹 Record Strain: The share of consumers struggling to pay bills climbed to a series high of 26%. This financial stress is most pronounced among younger consumers, lower-income households, and those in rural areas.
🔹 Income and Location Vulnerability: 44% of households earning less than $50,000 and 34% of those in rural areas report difficulty paying bills.
🔹 Economic Pessimism: Consumer confidence is fragile, with 46% of consumers feeling pessimistic about the U.S. economy, compared to 34% who are optimistic.
💰 Primary Stressors & Financial Goals
🔹 Price Pressure: A high share of consumers (90%) report financial stress. The biggest day-to-day factor is the cost of food and groceries (cited by 56%). For households already struggling, housing costs and debt are three times more likely to be named primary stressors.
🔒 Defining Security:
🔹 Struggling Consumers (45%) define financial security simply as covering everyday expenses without borrowing.
🔹 Non-Struggling Consumers equate security with having six months of cash savings for essentials and the ability to make discretionary purchases without checking a budget.
🔹 The Goal Gap: Even the modest goal of covering regular expenses without borrowing is viewed as not achievable today by 46% of struggling consumers, highlighting a significant and widening divide in financial resilience.
🔹 Health Indicator: Consumers view savings (emergency or long-term) as one of the most reliable indicators of financial health (28%), closely following household income (31%).
