US Government Shuts Down
The U.S. government has entered a partial shutdown after Congress failed to pass a full funding package by the midnight Friday deadline. Although the Senate approved a spending deal hours before the deadline, the House of Representatives is not scheduled to vote on it until Monday, creating a temporary lapse in funding.
Funding has lapsed for multiple federal agencies, including the Department of Defense, State Department, and Department of Health and Human Services. However, about four-fifths of federal discretionary spending was included in the Senate-passed package, limiting the scope to a partial shutdown.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is a key point of contention, with only a two-week stopgap measure approved to allow time for negotiations over immigration enforcement policies. Democrats had opposed full funding due to concerns over federal law enforcement actions, including recent incidents in Minnesota.
The shutdown is expected to be short-lived, as House leaders plan to vote on the Senate’s package on Monday. President Donald Trump has endorsed the deal, and Speaker Mike Johnson has urged House Republicans to support it.
Federal agencies have begun shutdown preparations, with OMB directing employees to report for "orderly shutdown activities." Roughly 692,000 workers may be affected, though many will likely be furloughed only briefly. This marks the second partial shutdown in six months, following a 43-day shutdown in 2025.
