An experiment administered the inhaled anesthetic isoflurane to rats to induce unconsciousness. One group also received microtubule-stabilizing drugs while the other did not.
Researchers measured loss of the righting reflex, defined as the ability to restore normal posture. The group given microtubule-stabilizing molecules remained conscious longer than the comparison group.
The study, published in eNeuro in August 2024, was conducted at Wellesley College. Its authors link the results to the Orch OR theory proposed by Roger Penrose and Stuart Hameroff in a 1996 paper.
That theory states that microtubules perform quantum computations through objective reduction and that each collapse of a quantum wave function produces a moment of conscious experience.
The article notes that quantum effects are typically observed only at temperatures near absolute zero, yet the rat findings are presented as evidence that similar operations can occur in the warmer mammalian brain.
Two earlier studies are cited in support: one in which ultraviolet photons produced quantum reactions lasting up to five nanoseconds inside microtubules, and another in which visible light re-emitted from microtubules over hundreds of milliseconds to seconds.

The Wellesley researchers state that confirmation of microtubule-based quantum operations would affect questions such as whether coma patients or non-human animals are conscious.
