🚨 AI-generated fake receipts now account for 71% of expense fraud 🚨
Banks and finance teams are facing a fast-growing fraud problem as AI tools make it easier to generate realistic fake receipts. New survey data and enterprise platform findings show employees are using AI to fabricate expenses that can slip past traditional review systems.
🔑 Key highlights:
🔹️ Four in 10 U.S. employees have used AI to generate a fake expense receipt, based on a survey by Atomik Research for Emburse.
🔹️ 19% fabricated a purchase that never happened, 15% inflated the value of a real expense, and 6% recreated a lost receipt using AI.
🔹️ 40% used company-funded AI tools to create those fake receipts.
🔹️ AppZen data showed AI-generated receipts rose from 0% of flagged fraudulent documents in March 2025 to 70.8% by mid-May 2026.
🔹️ Those fake receipts came from 745 employees at 174 companies and represented $148,143 in fabricated reimbursement claims.
🔹️ AI-generated fake receipts averaged about $100 each, lower than older template-based fakes, which averaged $182.
🔹️ Finance and compliance teams are increasingly relying on card transaction matching, merchant data, timestamps, virtual cards, and AI-powered controls instead of visual receipt checks alone.
🎯 Bottom Line: AI-generated receipts are rapidly changing expense fraud, pushing companies to move beyond document review and verify claims against actual transaction data.
