To Re-Open in, yup you guessed it 2030. 👀
🚨 CERN says the LHC has entered its final physics season before a four-year high-luminosity overhaul 🚨
CERN says the Large Hadron Collider has begun its last run before shutting down at the end of June for a major upgrade that will transform it into the High-Luminosity LHC.
🔑 Key highlights:
🔹️ The 2026 run began with the year’s first proton collisions on March 7.
🔹️ This is the final operating season before four years of upgrade work begins on June 29.
🔹️ The run includes nine weeks of proton collisions followed by three weeks of lead-ion collisions.
🔹️ CERN will end the season with two weeks of high-intensity proton-beam tests using bunches carrying about 40% more protons than standard LHC bunches.
🔹️ The goal of those tests is to prepare for future HiLumi operations and identify equipment limits before shutdown.
🔹️ CERN says part of the current LHC will be dismantled and replaced with new equipment during the upgrade.
🔹️ The High-Luminosity LHC is expected to start operating in 2030.
🔹️ CERN says the upgraded machine will generate far more collisions, helping physicists study known phenomena like the Higgs boson in greater detail and search for rarer new effects.
🎯 Bottom Line: CERN is framing 2026 as the LHC’s last lap before a major rebuild, with the next phase aimed at dramatically increasing collision rates and expanding the machine’s discovery potential.
